How to Play Sic Bo
Sic Bo is a dice game. Three dice are placed in a covered dome by the dealer. Before the shake, you place your bets on a layout. The layout covers every possible outcome. Totals, single numbers, pairs, triples and combinations are all on the table.
Once betting closes, the dealer shakes the dice. The result is revealed. Winning bets are paid out and the round ends.
There is no carry-over. Every round is a fresh start. You place your bet, the dice are shaken and the result is settled right away.
You can place more than one bet at a time. Some players bet only on Small or Big. Others cover several sections of the layout at once.
Sic Bo Bets and Payouts
The betting layout has a lot of options. The bets fall into a few simple groups.
- Small and Big are the easiest bets. Small wins if the total of all three dice is between 4 and 10. Big wins if the total is between 11 and 17. Both pay 1:1. Both lose if all three dice show the same number. The house edge on each is 2.78%. This is close to baccarat Banker odds. Small and Big are the best bets on the table.
- Combination bets cover two specific numbers appearing across the three dice. These pay 6:1 with a house edge of 2.78%. They are tied with Small and Big as the best bets on the table.
- Total bets are bets on the exact sum of all three dice. A total of 4 or 17 pays 50:1. A total of 9 or 12 pays 6:1. The house edge on total bets ranges from 9.72% to 18.98%. The totals of 9 and 12 have the worst odds on the whole table.
- Triple bets are bets on all three dice showing the same number. A specific triple pays 180:1. For example, betting on three 4s pays 180:1 if all three dice land on 4. The house edge is 16.2%. Any triple, no matter the number, pays 30:1 with a house edge of 13.89%.
Stick to Small, Big and combination bets for the best odds. Triple bets and total bets with high house edges cost a lot over time.
Super Sic Bo and Live Variants
- Super Sic Bo. Evolution's live version of Sic Bo. Before each roll, random multipliers of 2x to 999x are placed on some bet positions. If your bet wins and has a multiplier on it, you get paid the multiplier value instead of the standard payout. Small and Big bets are not eligible for multipliers.
- Speed Super Sic Bo. Same multiplier mechanic as Super Sic Bo with a shorter betting window. Built for players who want faster rounds.
- Mega Sic Bo. From Pragmatic Play. Random multipliers of up to 1000x are placed on the layout before each roll. The base game and bet types stay the same.
- Live Sic Bo Shanghai. From SA Gaming. Built for Asian players with an Asian-themed table, roadmaps and hot and cold number tracking.
Sic Bo in Asian Casinos
Sic Bo means "precious dice" in Chinese. The game is believed to be over 2,000 years old. It started in China and spread through Chinese communities across Asia and into Western markets.
The game goes by different names depending on where you play. In Macau and Hong Kong it is called Dai Siu or Tai Sai, which means "big small." In the Philippines it is called Hi-Lo. The rules are the same everywhere.
In Macau, Sic Bo is the second biggest table game by revenue after baccarat. It is one of only a handful of games officially licensed for the Macau casino floor. That shows how much the game is part of Chinese gambling culture.
Today Sic Bo is played across Southeast Asia at online casinos serving Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. Every major live casino provider offers a version of it. It is available at every casino reviewed on EightOdds that carries a live casino.
