The New 48-Team Format Changes How You Bet
The 2026 World Cup is the largest in the tournament's history. It has 48 teams, up from 32, split into 12 groups of four. There are 104 matches in total, played from 11 June to the final on 19 July at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Asian Handicap at a World Cup

The level line and the draw
One line matters more at a tournament than on a normal league weekend: the level handicap, written as 0 or AH 0. Back a team at 0 and you win if they win, get your full stake back if the match is drawn, and lose if they lose. It is the same bet as Draw No Bet. In the group stage, where a draw is a real and common result, the level line is the safest way to back a fancied team without the draw beating you.
A +0.5 line goes one step further. It pays out on a win or a draw. That is the underdog position when you expect a team to hold on for a point.

On the other side, the underdog at +1.5 or +2 profits from a narrow, respectable defeat. You do not need an upset to win money. You only need them to lose by less than the line, or to avoid losing at all.
Knockout Betting and the 90-Minute Rule
This is the part most betting guides skip, and the part that costs new bettors money.
From the Round of 32 onward, a tied match goes to 30 minutes of extra time, then a penalty shootout if it is still level. But the standard markets do not follow the match that far.
Here is a worked example. Brazil are -0.5 against a knockout opponent. The match is 1-1 after 90 minutes. Brazil score in extra time and win 2-1. Your -0.5 handicap still loses, because it settled at 1-1, a draw, when the 90 minutes ended. The same goes for a straight win bet on Brazil. They advanced, but your bet did not.
The fix is a different market. To qualify or to advance settles on who actually reaches the next round, including extra time and penalties. If your read is "this team gets through the tie," that is the bet to use, not the handicap and not the match-result win.
Totals and both teams to score need the same care in the knockouts. Some sportsbooks settle goals on 90 minutes only. Others count extra-time goals but never shootout goals. The convention differs by operator, so read the market rules before you stake. A penalty shootout goal never counts toward totals, correct score or goalscorer markets at any book.

- Iraq (Group I, with France) came through the intercontinental play-off, beating Bolivia.
- Jordan (Group J, drawn against holders Argentina) reach a World Cup for the first time.

The tournament winner market is led by the European and South American powers. Early prices put Spain and France at the top, both around 9/2 to 5/1, with England near 7/1, Portugal around 8/1, Brazil close to 9/1 and holders Argentina near 10/1. These prices move with every result, so treat them as a snapshot rather than a fixed line. Outright value is best before the tournament or early in the group stage, before the picture clears.
To reach the final is a softer version of the outright. It settles on a team actually making the final, so extra time and penalties count here, unlike the handicap. Stage of elimination asks how far a team goes: group stage, Round of 32, Round of 16, and so on up to winner. The new Round of 32 adds one more rung to that ladder than past World Cups had.
The top goalscorer, or Golden Boot, market pays out on the player who scores the most goals across the tournament. Kylian Mbappé and Harry Kane head the market. A few rules decide how it settles:
- Goals in extra time count toward a player's total. Penalty shootout goals do not.
- Goals scored in qualifying do not count. The tally starts fresh at the tournament.
